Class Description

We will be utilizing the Holt McDougal literature anthology this school year to cover all aspects of the language arts Common Core Standards.  Students will have these textbooks to use in class and can access the same book online via  http://my.hrw.com.  All students will receive a username and password to access these resources at home.

The eighth grade language arts curriculum will focus around the enduring understanding that is central to all language arts classroom at Cawley: "What we read and write affects how we make sense of the our world, the world around us, and of others."  Using the Keys to Literacy Content Writing curriculum, students will write often and in a variety of ways, including argumentative, informational, and narrative in language arts as well as across all subject areas.  The literary selections engage student in the exploration of themes and ideas that align with the enduring understanding and the following essential questions:

  • What does it mean to BELONG?
  • Are people basically GOOD?
  • What's really IMPORTANT?
  • Why does the PAST MATTER?

Students are also required to read independently on a daily/nightly basis (one book per quarter minimum) and show evidence of this for a grade.

Assignments in this class are graded on a point value system.  Most assignments are worth 100 points.  Some assignments are weighed more heavily than others.  For example, homework / class work typically count for 1/2 or once, quizzes count three times, and tests / projects / final drafts count four times.  All grades will be updated weekly on Power School.
